New York Car Insurance

New York Car Insurance Overview

New York Auto Insurance Information
Bodily Injury Liability (BIL)
New York requires motorists to have Bodily Injury Liability (BIL) protection, with minimum coverage of $25,000 per person with a $50,000 limit per accident. BIL covers expenses relating to the injury or death of another driver, or a cyclist or pedestrian, when the insured is at fault.
Property Damage Liability (PDL)
PDL insurance covers damage to the property of others incurred by the insured’s car. It does not, however, pay for damage to the insured’s car. For that, the person must have collision or comprehensive insurance. Comprehensive and collision coverage is not required in New York, although it is likely required by a lender if the owner still has a car loan or if the vehicle is leased.
Personal Injury Protection (PIP)
PIP insurance covers the medical expenses of the driver and any passengers in the vehicle at the time of the accident. In a worst-case scenario, PIP also covers necessary funeral expenses.
