Minnesota Auto Insurance Information

Bodily Injury Liability (BIL)

Under Minnesota law, motorists must carry a minimum of $30,000 person and $60,000 per accident in Bodily Injury Liability (BIL) insurance. This coverage helps pay the medical expenses of the other driver, cyclist or pedestrian if the insured is at fault.

Property Damage Liability (PDL)

The state also requires each motorist to carry at least $10,000 in Property Damage Liability (PDL) insurance. This insurance pays for repairs or replacement to the other driver’s vehicle when the insured is at fault. Neither BIL or PDL pay for expenses incurred by the at-fault driver in the accident.

Personal Injury Protection (PIP)

Drivers must carry a minimum of $40,000 in Personal Injury Protection (PIP) insurance, which pays for medical expenses, lost wages and related items no matter who is at fault. PIP insurance applies to the policyholder, their spouse, children, relatives living in the home without their own auto insurance, and anyone whom the policyholder has granted permission to drive the vehicle. Keep in mind all PIP claims require filing within six months of the accident.
